Our Designers: Alexandra Dodds

Alexandra Dodds is a jewelry and object maker – her small sculptures for the body are stocked at Miss Crabb. Rings, necklaces, bracelets are made out of bronze, sterling silver, gold and natural stones.

What sets your label apart?

No two things in nature are the same, which is how I like to treat my work. I make each piece of my jewelry, and I initially sculpt each piece by hand. I experiment with different found materials, paper, plastic, wood, wax – most of which are one off pieces. They all have differences in textures, details and finishes. Each piece also has its own name.

What is important in what you create?

The handmade is of importance to me, I know how easy it is to replicate and use molds, but I like each piece to be an individual sculpture, and will be emphasising this in my newest work, where all pieces will be one of a kind. It is also important that each piece works with the form of body, I quite often construct the piece on my own hand as I make it. I like the sculpture process to be transferred to the wearer… they are playful and stackable, multiple pieces and contrasting metals put together to create your own sculpture on your hand.

Tell us about your background.

I studied Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of art and design where I primarily had a sculptural/installation practice. I had never done any metalwork, I am self taught in the jewelry making world. I like that I am teaching myself things. It takes a bit longer sometimes, but I find my own ways for working things out, and have no expectations, so harbor the mistakes and experimentation. I started making my jewelry when I moved into a studio about a year after art school - had some ideas for some pieces I wanted to make for myself, and then I couldn’t stop making.

Inspirations, references, catalysts for creating?

The sculptured earth, the weathered landscape. The simple acts of finding, collecting and making. I am experimental by nature.

Films, books, magazines and albums you enjoy?

I have recently discovered the magazine Monocle, short articles about design, travel, food and fashion from all over the world.

I have a collection of vintage books, which have beautiful saturated images of landscapes. My favorite film of last year was Melancholia, and I am also a big Game of Thrones fan. My music taste is rather eclectic… Hip hop, pop, electronic… I am currently listening to the new Beach House song.

What do you like to wear?

I generally dress very comfortable, casual and boyish… but I like dressing up now and again. My favorite things to wear at the moment are my Penny Sage high-waisted shorts (which fit like a dream!), my Dr Denim black skinny jeans, button up shirts, and my collection of Swanndris that I can’t seem to part with.

Tell us about your winter collection.

I don’t really think of my work as collections that follow fashion seasons. My new work is a development from the previous, continuing to grow and shape and create a collection as a whole. It is more random and experimental than cohesive and ordered.
